Kerri MacDonald is a Canadian visual editor and writer known for her experimental storytelling.  

INSTAGRAM | EDITORIAL LEAD, DESIGN

Kerri leads editorial for the Design team at Instagram, overseeing the publication of Instagram-first storytelling about designers, architects and artists around the world. Using all of Instagram's surfaces, from IGTV to Reels, the team strives to tell the stories of those who are designing for a more inclusive, sustainable world. As a core member of the Brand Design team, Kerri's work extends to art curation for Instagram's global offices and in-product creative.

This role calls on a range of skills Kerri has developed throughout her career, including art direction; interviewing and writing; editing both text and images; assigning photographers and videographers; social strategy; and image research.

THE NEW YORK TIMES | PHOTOGRAPHY,  WRITING AND SOCIAL

Kerri is known for her work launching and editing @nytimes, the core Instagram account for The New York Times. She grew the audience to nearly 5 million followers, carving out new forms of visual storytelling that pushed the boundaries for the organization.

Over her 9 years and 4 roles at The Times, Kerri's work involved:
  • Experiments in off-platform storytelling: Instagram Stories (see many of them here)
  • Spearheading the newsroom's Instagram strategy 
  • Training journalists around the world on visual storytelling for social media
  • Collaborating on major visual projects highlighting user generated content
  • Telling stories with archival material on @nytarchives, an account she launched 
  • Covering breaking news and major events on Facebook and Twitter  
  • Collaborating projects that brought poetry to the news pages
  • Assigning photographers and collaborating with reporters on the Metro desk in NYC
  • Editing front-page photography and assigning in Asia from the Hong Kong bureau 
  • Writing for several sections, including Lens, where she was the first producer
  • Editing and producing hundreds of blog posts and slide shows for Lens
  • Early adventures interning for 3 desks: photo, video and metro 

ON THE SIDE | Kerri is slowly co-producing a podcast about crying in public. 

Kerri is based in New York. She received her M.A. from the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and her B.A. (Honors) from Queen's University.
