Poetry and Photographs:
Picture
In the summer of 2018, Kerri and Morrigan McCarthy, a national photo editor, selected poems by six poets and presented each one to a different photographer. Their challenge was to interpret the poetry in images. They wanted photographers to find inspiration in language — a single word, a phrase, the rhythm of verse. In these poems our photographers felt the passing of time. The everyday. The power and fury of nature.

+ Turning Poetry Into Photos
Picture

Read a poem slowly. Let the words sink in. Then photograph what you feel. That is what Morrigan and Kerri invited photographers to do in the summer of 2017 for a series of visual essays inspired by poetry.

They selected poems by six contemporary American poets and presented each one to a different photographer. The resulting essays ran in print over the course of three weeks. See the project online here.

#NYTEclipseWatch: Your Photos of A Solar Eclipse’s Journey Across America

On August 21, more than 3,000 people used the #NYTeclipsewatch hashtag as they witnessed the "Great American Eclipse." Along with a group of colleagues, Kerri worked on an interactive feature highlighting images and stories from the path of totality across the U.S.

*This project and related coverage were awarded a New York Times Publisher's Award and a silver medal ( Breaking/Daily News: Single-Subject Project) in the Society of News Design's 2017 Best of Digital Design Competition.)
